the Dark Denim Dilemma

I recently bought a pair of dark blue jeans at H&M, originally seeing my purchase as an addition to my ‘casual’ side of the wardrobe.

But lately I’ve become bored with my few pairs of pants/slacks, especially as the weather has yet to comfortably allow skirts, and am wondering if these dark denims could be considered appropriate for the regular work day [I won’t lie; sporadic laundry is also forcing my creative hand].
Working in an institution with no explicit dress code (see ev’s recent ponderings on this), I have no idea with what I can or should get away.  Keeping an eye on my coworkers’ outfits is only slightly helpful. While my area has little public interaction, I do at times meet with heads of other departments (who, being mostly men, wear suits).  This just confuses the issue.

If there is no visible stitching (like yellow thread in seams/pockets) is it slightly more formal?
If you can’t tell from a 5-ft distance I’m slummin’ it in jeans, is it ok?
Do celebrity/stylish-folk outfits pairing jeans and heels elevate the status of the original levi workhorse pant?

What’s a girl to do?
