no dress code woes

There are certain challenges associated with working for an institution with no set dress code. On the one hand, the lack of dress code is liberating; after all, I’m the girl who once turned down a job in an archive because women were required to wear hose (in my defense I was 22 and it was New Orleans in August)! But on the other hand, minus the guidelines it can be hard to know what is okay, and what isn’t.

To compound the issue, my job requires that I regularly move between three buildings (itinerant preservation, y’all). Each building has a distinctly different style - in Building A I can easily go an entire day and never see another person, in Building B (where I have spent the past three weeks) I am the only woman on the floor, and the guys are about 1000 times more interested in discussing digital asset management systems than the fine art of pattern mixing. Building C, however, tends to be a little more fashion conscious, and there is a much higher likelihood that I’ll run into a higher-up.

Today I was at Building C for a meeting with members of several departments throughout the library system. In honor of this meeting I decided to take a break from the very functional (and rain proof) clothing I’ve been wearing most of the week for a more polished look. I favor this whole blouse under dress look (here and here), and the simple cream blouse and black combo is timeless. The dress (worn backwards) was my grandmothers.

What is the appropriate skirt length for work? Thoughts? I’m not totally sure.

While this skirt is not terribly short by today’s fashion standards, it actually is short by my own granny-like standards. Now that I’m in my ahem, late twenties, I’ve gotten a little shy about shorter lengths, sticking mostly to knee length or below, so this skirt was actually a bit of a stretch for me. My saving grace were the tights, which helped me feel a bit more covered.

Otherwise, I think this outfit has a bit of a style nod to la’s school girl prep post. My updated take on this look consists of textured hose, oxfords, a blouse with lace detail, navy trench, and a bright madras scarf to break up all the blues.

Just a note on the archival image (courtesy of Life) the title of this image is “Mrs. O’Neil pinning up hems on all ten of her daughter’s dresses” … TEN daughters!

love requited

Remember a few weeks back when I told you about THE Oxfords? Well, when I first saw them they were on sale, but not a Great Sale. Fortunately I kept checking back and they finally came down to a price I could live with, and I couldn’t resist my oxford desires any longer.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before, but more often than not I get dressed in the dark. My significant other doesn’t go to work until several hours after me, so I just keep my fingers crossed that my socks will match.

Because of this, I tend to lay out my clothes the night before (yes, really.) I’m one of those people who, no matter what, is rushing in the morning. Planning ahead helps streamline my morning.

I’m currently working with the sound and moving engineers at our institution, so not only am I the only lady on the floor, I’m in a chillier than usual environment. I decided to keep my look fairly basic, with my mind on staying warm. Textured tights, a comfy A-line jersey skirt, and a fitted royal blue sweater. I can’t say that today’s outfit was terribly flashy, but I think it is a fairly polished look.

The best part? The oxfords are comfortable! The low “sturdy” heal is a great alternative to my usual flats.

What isn’t to love about this beautiful two-toned oxford by Seychelles?

Nothing! So lovely, so classic. With such a perfect heal height! This shoe shouts archivist!
